Yard Work
Part of the joy of home ownership is maintaining the yarden. The heat index in North Texas is currently well over 100 degrees, so doing this in the heat of the summer can be challenging. After I finished mowing and edging the yard this morning, I got to thinking about how the yardening tools for doing these chores have changed. I currently use a self-propelled lawnmower and an electric weedeater. I have an electric leaf blower and I have been known to use an electric hedge trimmer and on occasion a chainsaw.
During the course of our travels collecting vintage yardening items, we have amassed an array of antique garden tools. Looking at these tools reminds me of how soft we have become. We use a lot of these items as yard art in our own yard. An old hand push rotary Sears Craftsman mower leans against an oak tree in our front yard. We have a push edger that looks like something most have never seen. A triple cut hedge trimmer is something from a horror movie or maybe Edward Scissorhands. Part of the fun of collecting this stuff is imagining folks actually using this version of technology in the forties or fifties. When I think about people using these tools in the summer heat like this, I do realize how lucky I am that yardening technology advanced …… but it is still hot.
